INVITATION & REGULATIONS

1. Invitation
This is the official invitation to all National Chess Federations of FIDE and eligible players to participate in the World Amateur Chess Championships for men and women with a FIDE rating under 2300. In total, 6 (six) championship titles in 3 categories will be awarded: Open & Women u-1700, Open & Women u-2000, Open & Women u-2300. The dates are from 2 April (arrivals) to 12 April 2020 (departures).
2. Playing Venue
The championships will be held in the 5-star Conference Resort “Aldemar Knosssos Royal”, 23 km east of Heraklion airport, on the seaside of Hersonissos in Crete, Greece.

4. Technical Regulations
4.1 There will be separate Championships for FIDE rating categories under-2300, under-2000 & under-1700. In each rating section, a separate Championship for women shall be organized only if there are at least 10 women entries from at least 2 continents. Otherwise the women's event will be merged with open.
4.2 a) The Championships are open for players registered by their national federation. FIDE member federations shall have the right to send as many players as they wish.
b) The Winners from each World Amateur Championship rating section and from each Continental Amateur Championship rating section, of the year preceding this edition, are invited with personal rights as long as they don't reach or exceed a FIDE rating of 2300 by the registration deadline, and their places cannot be substituted.
4.3 a) For participation in the u-2300 section, a player must not have a published FIDE rating of 2300 or greater for at least one year prior to the registration deadline (17 February ‘20). A player must not have any title above FM (or WFM for women) when the tournament starts.
b) For participation in the u-2000 section, a player must not have a published FIDE rating of 2000 or greater for at least one year prior to the start of the championship (2 April ‘20). A player must not have any title above CM (or WCM for women) when the tournament starts.
c) For participation in the u-1700 section, a player must not have a published FIDE rating of 1700 or greater for at least one year prior to the start of the championship (2 April ‘20). A player must not have any title above CM (or WCM for women) when the tournament starts.
If a player reaches or exceeds the FIDE rating of 1700 or 2000 after the registration deadline, he/she will play in the upper rating category.
4.4 a) The games will be held in 9 rounds with FIDE-rated Swiss system.
b) The time limit for each player is 90 minutes for the whole game + 30 seconds increment for every move played, starting from the first move.
c) A player forfeits the game if he hasn't appeared at his board within 15 minutes after the start of the game.
d) Tie-break criteria: The final ranking order of the players is determined by the number of points scored. If at the end of the tournament, two or more players are tied for the first place or for any prize, the tie shall be broken in priority accordance to the following criteria for Swiss events:
i. Results of direct encounters between the tied players (applies only if all tied players have played each other).
ii. Buccholz Cut 1.
iii. Buccholz.
iv. The greater number of games played with black.
v. The greater number of wins.
e) The FIDE Anti-Cheating rules and guidelines are valid for all FIDE World Championships.
f) Appeals against decisions of the Chief Arbiter must be submitted in written form to the Chairman of the appeals committee within one hour after the completion of the respective game. The protest must be accompanied with the sum of 200 €, as a deposit from the signatory. If the appeal is granted, the sum shall be returned immediately. If the appeal is refused, the deposit is forfeited to FIDE. The appeal has to be lodged by the player. The decisions of the Appeals Committee are final.
5. Titles & Qualifications
5.1 The three (3) gold winners of the Open/Men sections receive respectively the titles of: ”2020 World Amateur Champion” for the u-2300 section ”2020 World Amateur Champion u-2000” ”2020 World Amateur Champion u-1700”
5.2 The three (3) gold winners of the Women sections receive respectively the titles of: ”2020 World Women’s Amateur Champion” for the u-2300 section “2020 World Women’s Amateur Champion u-2000” “2020 World Women’s Amateur Champion u-1700”
5.3 The gold winners of each section u-2300, u-2000 & u-1700 (in total 6 winners, men and women sections) also obtain a personal right qualification for the next World Amateur Championships, as long as they don't reach or exceed a FIDE rating of 2300, with free accommodation in double occupancy room & full board provided from the local Organizing Committee of the FIDE World Amateur Championships 2021.
5.4 FIDE titles shall be awarded in accordance with the current FIDE Handbook.
5.5 All players will receive certificates of participation.

7. Travel Details
Participants should book their flights to Heraklion International Airport (HER). The bus transportation from and to Heraklion International Airport airport is included in the organisation package for all participants on the arrival day (2nd April 2020) and the departure day (12th April 2020). Transportation from the organizers in other dates are possible upon request with an extra charge.
8. Registration - Accommodation packages (10 nights)
OFFICIAL HOTEL: 5-star ALDEMAR KNOSSOS ROYAL (*****)
Registration - Accommodation package includes (per person):
·         Accommodation for 10 nights.
·         Breakfast, lunch and dinner, including potable water (full board) daily.
·         Transportation from and to Heraklion airport on 2nd and 12th April.
·         Registration and FIDE fees.
·         All taxes (including VAT and Municipality Tax).

Extra nights can be requested in advance and, upon availability, can be possible at a proportional cost:
Price per night in a triple room: 54 euros per person
Price per night in a double room: 58 euros per person
Price per night in a single room: 85 euros per person.
Registration fee: 100 euros per person (accreditation and airport transfer included on 2 and 12 April).
FIDE entry fee: 30 euros (if applicable).
The deadline for registrations and bookings is 17th February 2020, together with a 30% deposit payment for the selected registration-accommodation package.
9. Registration deadline
All players, accompanying persons and delegation members have to register through their national federations before the deadline of 17th February 2020, together with a 30% deposit payment of the registration-accommodation package described in article (8) above. After the deadline, a late registration fee of 50 euros per participant may be required.
The complete registration of each delegation should be sent by the national federation, or have its approval, and must include the surname/s, first name/s, FIDE ID number, FIDE rating, dates of arrival/departure and passport number (for visa only purpose) of each player, each accompanying person and each delegation member where applicable. It must also include clearly the name, telephone and e-mail of the Chief of Delegation who must be an adult.
Registrations and bookings for the World Amateur Chess Championships 2020 are possible only through the appointed local Organizer and only by email: registrations@crete2020.org
10.Visa information
Players and accompanying persons who need a visa to enter Greece, are requested to contact the Organizer before the 17th February 2020. The organizer will provide invitations for visas only after the necessary payments are wired, as described in articles (8) and (9) above. Schengen visas are valid in Greece.
11. Cretan Chess Festival 2020
The FIDE World Amateur Championships are part of the “Cretan Chess Festival 2020”, together with the European School Chess Championships (also 2-12 April 2020) and the FIDE World Youth/Cadet Blitz & Rapid Championships (12-16 April 2020) in Crete. A unique opportunity for young players to combine two chess events in a beautiful island with only one airticket!
